Student goal setting advice

Student goal setting advice is often given, but rarely heeded. Why do I say that? Well, as most of us know that young children/young adults very rarely listen to their elders purely on the basis that they think they know it all, and that they don’t want to be lectured! We’ve all been there and done it!

However, student goal setting is an important part of growing up and knowing what you want out of life. It’s too easy to let life float by, without planning on your next phase in life.

If you have problems with goalsetting – then why not ask a question, and we’ll answer it for you.

If you can find out how you can use smart goal setting techniques and guidelines, and actually put them into action, you, as a student, are going to be one of the top 3% of people that set goals. This means you have a much better chance of success than those around you.

Goal setting is taught to youngsters at school, but not in the way it should be. I wish teachers would teach goal setting properly, rather than just expecting students to do it for themselves. You, as a student, are taught from an early age to set “targets”, but not to actually set goals.

At the beginning of a term you get a projected grade, and at the end of the school year you should have reached that grade. During that time, there has been little, if any, response from teachers as to how you should achieve that target. Schools concentrate much more on tests and target figures than actually seeing the bigger picture.

Why do you need goal setting guidelines?

As a student you are a very busy person, with an active social life and a little bit of work which you fit in around going out!? This is why student goal setting is so important. Without a plan of action and goals to focus on, it’s very easy to get waylaid and not concentrate of what you need to be doing. If we can teach goal setting properly to you, then we will have done our job.

Smart goal setting will make all the difference to how you progress through your early years, at school, and after school.

Don’t lack faith in your ability to achieve whatever goals you set. Don’t be put down by negative thinking or people telling you what you can and can’t do. You are in charge of what you want out of life, not any one else. Please remember that.

What does SMART goal setting stand for?

Smart goal setting means setting Specific, Measurable, Attainable goals with clear Results in a set Time frame. Now, if you take this acronym, you can start to think about where you want to go from today.

As a student, you are going to begin to start thinking about what career you are going to have. If you know what you want to do, then the task of goal setting will be simpler for you.

However, if you are like most students, you’re probably unsure about which direction you are heading.

Start your student goal setting now

1. If you don’t know which career path you want to follow, don’t worry. You can start your goal setting by achieving the grades you want. Working hard towards your ultimate grade is your first task in your goal setting plan. Realise though that all students are going to have different goals and different plans, so don’t compare yourself to others.

2. Decide how much work you need to do to achieve your grades. This is particularly important where student goal setting is concerned, as you will get distracted by your social life, be it in the bar or on the sports field, or just chilling out! So if you have set out (on paper) how much time you need to carry out your studies with the serious intention of attaining the grade you want, then you will find it much easier not to get distracted.

3. Have a look at why goal setting is important as this will give you goal setting guidelines which show you why it’s good to get into the habit of focusing your mind on what you want out of life.

4. Set realistic goals for yourself. It’s no good setting pie in the sky goals that you are never going to achieve. Student goal setting is all about achieving small and realistic goals you set which in turn will give you a lot more confidence. Most people fail to set goals for this very reason; they fear they will fail to achieve their goals. Don’t fall into this trap.

5. Absorb all goal setting information you can. Be the student you are, and devour all goal setting information, because smart goal setting really does work. And by learning to goal set now, you will be miles ahead of others when you are eventually in the work place.
